From Graffiti to Gratitude
MC YOGI’s Journey of Self-discovery, Healing, Growth & Spiritual Wisdom
MC YOGI grew up painting graffiti in the Bay Area. From a young age, he began drawing, painting, and scribbling his cartoons and images on every surface around him. As a teenager, he found himself getting kicked out of every school he attended, skipping classes, getting suspended and expelled, and was arrested for graffiti, Eventually, this led him to living in a group home for troubled teens. At the age of seventeen, he discovered yoga, thanks to his father, and the practice redirected his life and led him on a spiritual quest. In those early years of being a young spiritual student, he shaved his head, changed his lifestyle and lived and studied like a monk.
Mentors, Masters & Spiritual Guides
Several encounters, including a meeting with the spiritual meditation master Gurumayi, sparked in him a burning yearning to deepen and explore the inner life. He mentored with his father’s teacher, his spiritual uncle Larry Schultz, who famously traveled and taught yoga to the Grateful Dead. This mentorship led him to Larry’s teachers, including Dorthy Divack known for her amazing ability to channel, guide, and inspire through her many years as a teacher of “A Course in Miracles”. Dorthy would often say “what is real can never be threatened, Only Love is Real”. He was also introduced to Larry’s Yoga Guru, the yoga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and his grandson Sharath in Mysore, South India.
Many vigorous years of practice pushed him further on the path, including time spent with the Ramakrishna order of monks, where he spent years studying with the Vedanta society. He began traveling to India and after many trips in 2010 he visited the holy mountain Arunachala in Tamil Nadu south India. This experience of being in the ashram of the saint Ramana Maharshi opened him up to the power of Advaita Vedanta or non-dualism. In his many travels, he also spent time with the Krishna community of devotees, where his love of music and sacred chanting ripened and became his main focus.
A Harmonious Fusion of Music, Spirituality, and Healing
After many decades of practicing, teaching, and being with enlightened sages and saints, ultimately, the path led him to realize that his Guru was none other than Shri Neem Karoli Baba. The music was always flowing through these early pivotal years, but it wasn’t until 2008 that he found himself working on his first album bridging yogic philosophy, mythology and chanting with a more modern electronic sound and approach. Combining classic hip hop break beats with catchy hooks, mystical melodies, and spiritual themes, the MC YOGI sound was born.
Carrying the Message of Love and Healing Forward
Having recorded with many devotees of Maharaji, including Bhagavan Das, Krishna Das, and Jai Uttal, and spending time with the renowned spiritual teacher Ram Dass, he realized Neem Karoli Baba had been guiding his journey all along. Now, MC YOGI continues to record new music, perform, and teach globally. His main emphasis is bringing uplifting and deeply healing sounds and teachings into the world. He also continues his art, painting and designing on the side and sharing his unique, playful, and poetic style of delivering the teachings that he received from all of his amazing teachers. In the words of the song entitled “Road Home” that he recorded with fellow songwriter Trevor Hall, “The world is a bridge and the body’s on loan, God bless every child traveling the road home.” MC YOGI carries this message to young people and all those who are working to redirect their lives back toward Spirit, healing, yoga, peace and love.
